Anyone Have A Child W/ A Milk Allergy? Or Have One Yourself?
Posted by: Alan in Milk Allergies, tags: Allergy, Anyone, Child, Have, Milk, Yourself
We just recently found out that our 4 year old daughter has many food allergies, including an allergy to milk. My question is what do you use to replace milk? I went to the store today and noticed there was rice, soy, and almond milk. Are there any others? And which is the more common choice for children? We tried the plain soy milk and she really didn’t care for it at all. I tried it myself and it was pretty bad, lol. We removed milk from her diet about a month ago and she really misses her cereal in the morning (won’t eat it dry), and plus I don’t like the idea of her drinking juice most of the day even though she drinks plenty of water too. Any suggestions?

Soy milk is fine when you’re cooking with it. My teenage son gets glue ear if he has any milk, although we didn’t realise that until a couple of years ago, so we’ve only recently learned about how to cope without milk. He uses almond milk on his cereal, which he says is much nicer on its own. However if I need milk in any recipe, I use soy milk instead of real milk and it tastes fine when it’s cooked. I’ve even made custard with soy milk. You can get soy cream and soy cheese too, or you may find that goat’s cheese is OK.
As for drinks, juice is OK so long as it’s unsweetened, and is probably best diluted. There are various other milk-free drinks available – a chocolate oat milk was my son’s favourite for a while.

My daughter is allergic to milk and soy. Her allergist recommended Rice Milk. It’s quite mild in taste. They have different flavors, but we stick to Vanilla or Original, then flavor it with strawberry or chocolate powder if she wants it.
We use it for everything she eats – cereal, scrambled eggs, etc.
We buy the Rice Dream brand. Super Wal-Mart usually has 1/2 gallons in the dairy case. Sometimes we buy the smaller packages instead.

Most people with these allergies choose to supplement with Vanilla Silk. I personally like Vanilla almond milk, but if she has many food allergies, this could prompt an allergy to nuts. I’d stick with Vanilla Silk. It tastes like a sugar cookie. My nephew is deathly allergic to ALL dairy (including eggs) which stinks. I’d keep some on hand for all of your recipes–even the plain silk for dinner options (think mashed potatoes–can’t add milk–add plain soy). Living a dairy free lifestyle stinks, but you’ll become a pro at reading labels and finding things she can have. It’ll be exciting for you and for her when you discover a new food item she is able to eat. Good luck!

Soy milk takes some getting used to, but the chocolate flavored soy milk is delicious. It kinda tastes nutty, like melted Rocky Road ice cream…

I would talk it over with her doctor. Sometimes the replacements for milk aren’t sufficient. My 6 year old grandson is allergic to milk and all byproducts of milk. Kids do not need milk at all to be healthy and strong. Ask her doctor about vitamin D and calcium supplements too.
If you give her juice to replace the milk, that’s not good either, expecially on their teeth.
I’d stick with the best drink mother nature provides, water.
Don’t give her dry cereal. There are numerous other breakfast foods that are better for her anyway. You need to totally rethink her diet when allergies crop up.
Good luck to you and her!

is she lactose intolerant?
If so lactose free milk is good and taste good. as I was very highly allergic to milk and others, I had to have allergy shots 1 time a week. well… that was when I was a child and well I am almost 30 so Id say it changed? maybe? but I would just avoid milk all together so she wont suffer.
good luck.

I don’t have a milk allergy, but I have Celiac disease….the easiest way to describe that is a wheat allergy. Food allergies take some getting used to. Allergen food doesn’t taste “right”, the offending ingredient is in all kinds of things that you wouldn’t even imagine, and you have to get over the hump with food cravings. I remember when I started the wheat (gluten) free diet. Everything had that awful gluten free taste, I craved chinese food like you can’t believe, and was frustrated at trying to find something to eat. Now, 4 years gluten free, I really don’t “taste” gluen free anymore, I don’t crave the things I can’t have, and I’m so used to this diet that I forget from time to time that I’m different from everybody else. This is going to be a hard time for her. She is going to miss things. The new products aren’t going to taste right. Give her options, try to substitute ingredients and make her favorite foods, and before you know it, she won’t remember what she is missing. Good luck!

You could use soy milk. My mom drinks it when she’s fasting (Orthodox Religion). My cousin’s daughter has many allergies (nuts, milk, beans, & more) so I see how it’s hard for you to pick what she eats.
